Greenhouse – What To Consider When Building A Greenhouse by Walter Chase
Introduction
Standby, the cost of food is going up, in fact you may have already seen price increases. Why are they going up? They’re many reasons, and here are a few
* Population – The world’s population is increasing and there is more of the population increasing their standard of living demanding more and better food products.
* United State Government – The United States Government has passed laws requiring more ethanol in our gas, diverting our corn supplies away from our food supplies and our animal feed. This will cause our food supplies to increase all the way from products made with corn to our meat sources.
These are a couple of the reasons for food costs to increase. So what can you do about it? Grow your own with a vegetable garden utilizing a greenhouse. By using a greenhouse you can extend your growing season and have more vegetables.
When I lived in Alaska, I built a greenhouse, and here are some of the things I had to consider when I built it.
Location
One of the first things you need to consider is location. You do not want to put it under trees or other shady spots. Find a location that receives the maximum sunlight exposure. This will allow your vegetables to have maximum growth.
Heating.
The next thing to decide is whether you will heat your greenhouse from an external source. To heat externally could be beneficial to help extend the growing season, but you need to consider
* Cost- I lived in Alaska and elected to not heat my greenhouse because all we had, was oil, and it was to expensive and not worth the cost. Now if you have access to natural gas, it could be cost-effective to install a gas heater. Another thought is just to use electrical heaters to heat the greenhouse.
* Weather- The type of weather you have is also a factor. Living in Alaska it was extremely cold, with temperatures as cold as -50 degrees, with normal winter temperatures averaging between -20 and -30 degrees. It warms slowly in the spring, but to cold to heat a greenhouse. If you live in more hospitable lands, it may be worth it to heat your greenhouse.
Material
Several types of material can be used to construct your greenhouse. The one I built used a mixture of fiberglass for the roof and sides and wood for the general foundation.
Other material that can be used is cement or bricks for the foundation and glass or plastic for the sides and roof.
